Dhiraj and his wife Simrith were motivated by a strong need to give something back to Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) following the amazing care provided to their little boy Dylan. The couple initially signed up to complete the London Landmarks Half Marathon in March 2020 to fundraise for GOSH but lockdown led to it being delayed twice, with the event eventually taking place in October 2021.
Having two small children meant that they trained separately most of the time – which was probably for the best! On the occasions they did train together it wasn’t always easy (with the inevitable bickering, many blisters and the glamour of dodgy tummies) but on the day their team spirit rallied and they supported each other perfectly. “The motivation was Dylan and GOSH all the way round. We kept that firmly in our sights and were happy with our time of 2 hours and 30 minutes” commented Simrith.
After the half marathon, the legendary GOSH care and attention even extended to its fundraisers as they were treated to leg massages, hot beverages and food in the GOSH team tent.
We could not have got through this difficult time for Dylan and our family without the amazing nurses, surgeons, doctors and every member of staff at this hospital with their facilities, making our stay there comfortable and family-friendly. This is our way of saying thank you to this brilliant hospital: thank you for looking after our son and for giving us hope, and thank you for being so kind with your time and attention for every single appointment we have had here.
Dhiraj and Simrith
Initially Dhiraj and Simrith aimed to raise a fantastic amount of £3000 – but they have more than doubled that with an incredible £6000 raised to date. The Just Giving page is still open as family, friends and colleagues continue to support their efforts.
The couple said ‘never again’ when they finished but, encouraged by Dhiraj, Simrith is reconsidering! They may do another half marathon or get really ambitious with the full 26 miles next time – but the main attraction is the ability to raise such impressive funds for the hospital that is so dear to their whole family.
